Welcome to Regions! We are delighted that you are considering the Postgraduate Training Program in Internal Medicine at Regions Hospital through the University of Minnesota's Internal Medicine Residency Program. The residency program is vital to our mission in the Department of Medicine and we take pride in the exceptional quality and dedication of our graduates once they begin their own practice in General Internal Medicine or the subspecialties.
We continue to invest much time, effort, and resources to provide an atmosphere that allows for maximal learning. Speak to our current house staff and you will also hear of the camaraderie and support that you feel while at Regions. The attending physicians serve as mentors and advisors and many long-standing friendships and relationships develop over the course of your studies. We carefully evaluate the time that you spend in the hospital to ensure that you will maximize learning opportunities and minimize stress and tasks that do not contribute to your education. We administer some of your outpatient continuity clinics and we ensure that you have an "extracurricular life" as well.
Regions Hospital is a 427 bed academic medical center located on the East Side of the Twin Cities in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota. Regions Hospital is the teaching campus in St. Paul for the University of Minnesota School of Medicine. Our teaching faculty have academic appointments at the University of Minnesota Medical School and are involved in undergraduate education as well as postgraduate medical education both at the university and on Regions campus. Many of our faculty are former residents and chief residents who have won numerous teaching awards locally and nationally. In addition to patient care and education, our faculty is involved in basic science, clinical, and health services research.
A very large hospitalist program, one of the first in the nation, thrives at Regions Hospital. The caliber of this program is reflected by the fact that awards for clinical excellence, from the National Association of Inpatient Physicians, have been given to multiple hospitalists from Regions. The University of Minnesota Internal Medicine Residency and Regions Hospital are working together to create a hospitalist learning track for residents who are interested in hospitalist medicine.
Regions has an illustrious history dating back at least 125 years. It has been involved with graduate medical education since the 1940's. Known as St.
Paul Ramsey Medical Center until the mid 1990's, it established itself as an excellent center for training in Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Burn care, among other subspecialties. It is the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the East metropolitan area and only one of three in Minnesota. Regions Burn Center is renowned within the Midwest area and nationally. Regions is currently undergoing a $179 million addition designed to meet the growing and highest-priority health care needs of the region, including critical community health issues such as inpatient mental health and emergency medical services. In addition, the project will provide a higher percentage of private patient rooms. Construction began in January 2007 and is expected to be completed by 2009.
The St. Paul/Minneapolis area is a wonderful place to live. Opportunities for extracurricular activities are so numerous that the biggest problem is deciding which ones to participate in. As well, the Twin Cities and surrounding areas are wonderful places to begin a medical career upon graduation.
